NEW STUDY ON THE INSTALLATION OF RAINWATER TANKS
A new study prepaired for the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, Environment Victoria and the Australian Conservation Foundation shows rainwater tanks are a cost-effective solution to the urban water problems plaguing Melbourne, Sydney and South-East Queensland.
The report – prepared by economists Marsden Jacobs Associates found the widespread installation of rainwater tanks in Australian capital cities would mean big savings in water, energy and money.
The Report commented that:
Rainwater tanks were cost competitive with dams and desalination plants. Rainwater tanks are five times more energy efficient than desalination plants and twice as energy efficient as the proposed Traveston dam, per megalitre of water produced.
If governments deployed rainwater tanks to 5 per cent of households each year in Sydney and South-East Queensland, dams and desalination plants planned for 2010 could possibilly be delayed past 2026 (Sydney) and 2019 (SEQ).
Most Australian houses are suitable for a rainwater tank. In Sydney 65 per cent (or 1.1 million houses), in SEQ 73 per cent (or 900 000 houses) and in Melbourne 72 per cent of existing houses have potential for a rainwater tank.
Fewer than 6 per cent of the houses in Melbourne, Sydney, South-East Queensland have rainwater tanks installed.
Rainwater tanks collect and store water far more efficiently than dams, especially in times of drought. As the climate changes installing rainwater tanks continue to be a vialable alternative taking advantage of water run-off from our rooftops.
Governments have a responsibility to boost the take-up of installation of rainwater tanks especially in major Australian cities by way of increasing rebates as well as increasing public awareness.

How to Save Water in your Home
For over a century, NSW was thought to have an endless source of water.
In rural NSW, it has been understood for many years that water is a precious commodity.
In Sydney and regional NSW they are just coming to that understanding.
Today, a reality of living in the 21st Century is that we must be converted to conservation, we have water restrictions in almost all of NSW and we still need to reduce the amount of water we waste.
Many people are simply confused about what is available and how each option works and don’t know which combination would best suit there home.
Here are the three most popular types of Water Saving devices:
Flow Restricters and other water saving devices simply decrease the pressure coming out of the tap and going down the sink.
In most cases you can’t tell the difference but over a year they can save thousands of litres of water.
Rainwater Tanks collect water from your roof and store it.
The water is commonly used to water the garden, do the washing, flush toilets and other non drinking uses.
There are many different styles and variations available including underground, slime line, squat, tall and fencing styles and many more.
Grey Water Systems collect water from washing machines, the bath and the shower and re-use that water for flushing toilets, to water the garden and other non drinking uses.
However, the question remains, which one to choose and who should install them?
All the items listed above should be installed and commissioned by a Licensed Plumber.
To assist home owners select a licensed plumber with the training to install these devices, the Master Plumbers Association of NSW in partnership with the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation have established the EnviroplumberTM program.
EnviroplumbersTM have completed additional training in the installation and legal requirements of these water saving devices.
They can offer you advice and assistance when selecting which Water Saving device you should use in your home.
